Spring Bloom Alert: Early Bloomers to Look For
As winter fades and the days grow longer, the Trochu and District Arboretum begins to stir with signs of life. Among the first plants to make an appearance are some of spring’s most beloved early bloomers: crocuses and tulips.
Crocuses: Tiny but Mighty

Crocuses are often the first flowers to burst through the soil—sometimes even before the snow has completely melted. These charming little blooms come in shades of purple, white, yellow, and striped varieties, and they signal that spring is truly on its way.
Look for crocuses around garden beds and beneath trees in the arboretum. Their low-growing habit and vibrant colours make them a favorite for visitors and pollinators alike.
Fun fact: Crocuses open in the sunlight and close in cloudy or cold conditions—a natural weather forecast in bloom!
Tulips: The Icons of Spring

Following closely behind crocuses are the tulips, known for their bold colours and elegant forms. From classic red and yellow to soft pastels and multi-coloured varieties, tulips offer an ever-changing display through early and mid-spring.
You’ll find tulips blooming in neat beds, along pathways, and tucked into corners of the arboretum, adding charm and brilliance to the landscape.
Tip for Visitors: Come back every week to see new tulip varieties as they bloom in succession throughout the season.
