The Trochu Arboretum, one of Alberta’s horticultural gems, was at the centre of a special summer festival in 2024. Alberta Open Farm Days (OFD) is a province-wide celebration highlighting Alberta’s agriculture sector. When OFD staff came to Kneehill County looking to form a cluster of hosts, the Trochu Arboretum saw it as a great opportunity to be the community hub.

Throughout the town, visitors enjoyed several mainstreet attractions, toured the Trochu
Museum, and walked among many impressive types of farm equipment at an ag dealership. For many sightseers, their visit to the Trochu Flower Show was the first time viewing bench show exhibits. Getting to each venue was easy, using the free shuttle bus that ran from 10AM to 5PM.

With a full program of activities at the Arboretum, Facility Manager Carole Anne Holmstrom said some people stayed for the whole day. At the artisan market there were 18 local vendors, many selling ag-related products. Local experts presented demonstrations on maple syrup production, using biochar, drought-tolerant gardening techniques, composting, and beekeeping. There was food to eat, locally produced wine to taste, and native plants to purchase. Playing from the deck of the Arboretum’s house, local musicians kept visitors engaged throughout the day.

All of this came together because of the many partnerships. Along with the big community volunteer effort, Kneehill County’s support was key to the event’s success. Some of the details the County sponsored were the school bus, promotions, portable toilets, and the musicians.

With more than 350 OFD visitors, Holmstrom said the Arboretum was full. It was a wonderful way to showcase all parts of the 5 acre Arboretum.
