Bringing Blooms to Seniors: Trochu Arboretum’s Heartfelt Delivery

Just before the first frost in early October, the Trochu Arboretum team and our dedicated volunteers set out to share the beauty of the garden with the residents of St. Mary’s Health Care Centre. Carefully harvesting dahlias, strawflowers, and other vibrant late-season blooms, the team transformed the Arboretum’s final floral displays of the year into joyful, hand-arranged bouquets.

The project was about more than just flowers. It was an opportunity to bring happiness, foster connection, and celebrate the spirit of giving within the community. Many of the seniors commented on how uplifting it was to receive a bouquet that captured the colors, energy, and life of the Arboretum gardens, offering a bright spot on crisp autumn days.

How It Happened

  • Volunteers harvested blooms just before the frost, ensuring each flower reached residents at its peak of color and freshness.
  • Staff and volunteers arranged the flowers into individual bouquets, creating personal gifts for each resident.
  • On delivery day, seniors were greeted with smiles, laughter, and the sweet fragrance of autumn flowers, sparking conversation, memories, and moments of shared joy.
  • The team also shared a little about the Arboretum itself, explaining how these gardens are carefully tended year-round to support both wildlife and community enjoyment.

This initiative highlights the Arboretum’s role as a living, giving part of the Trochu community, connecting gardens, volunteers, and local residents. It also emphasizes the simple yet profound impact of nature’s beauty on wellbeing, reminding us all that even a single bouquet can brighten someone’s day and spark meaningful connection.

The Trochu Arboretum extends its deepest thanks to all volunteers who helped with picking, arranging, and delivering flowers, and invites community members to share ideas for future projects that bring the Arboretum’s resources and beauty to local residents.
