Our Mission
The Trochu and District Arboretum Society is committed to fostering environmental education, conservation, and community engagement. We strive to provide a serene and educational environment where visitors can connect with nature, learn about diverse plant species, and appreciate the rich history that has shaped our beloved Arboretum.
Our History
The roots of the Arboretum trace back to 1911 when Dr. J.D. Milne, Trochu’s first medical doctor, acquired the land from the Calgary and Edmonton Railway Company. Originally subdivided into town lots, the outbreak of World War I halted development plans. Dr. Milne departed for England in 1913 to further his studies and serve in the British Army, returning to Canada in 1919 to continue his medical practice in Calgary until his retirement in 1957.
In 1946, Dr. Andrew James Stewart Hay purchased the property. Born in Medicine Hat in 1914, Dr. Hay earned his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1942. During World War II, he served overseas with the Canadian Army Medical Corps. After the war, he settled in Trochu, dedicating 27 years to medical practice at St. Mary’s Hospital and serving the surrounding community. Beyond his medical contributions, Dr. Hay was an avid gardener, artist, and pianist. He enriched the property by planting numerous trees, shrubs, and flowers, many of which continue to thrive today. Dr. Hay passed away in 1973, leaving behind a legacy cherished by the community.
The property remained unoccupied for nearly a decade until Sandy and Mary Welbourn acquired it in 1982. Recognizing its potential, they initiated the transformation of the grounds into an arboretum. Through their vision and hard work, the Trochu Arboretum officially opened on July 1, 1989. Today, the Arboretum is managed by the Trochu and District Arboretum Society, continuing to serve as a vibrant community hub and a living tribute to those who nurtured its growth.
Dr. Hay House

A focal point within the Arboretum is the Dr. Hay House, a charming bungalow exemplifying Craftsman architectural design. Constructed in 1915 by John Loman, a local farmer, the house features hallmark elements such as a medium pitch-hipped roof, salt and pepper dash stucco exterior, and red pressed brick chimneys. Dr. Hay resided here from 1946 until his passing in 1973. The house not only served as his residence but also as a canvas for his artistic and horticultural passions. In May 2022, the Town of Trochu designated the Dr. Hay House as a Municipal Historic Resource, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
